The Hartford, a leading provider of disability insurance and a long-time advocate for adaptive sports, has entered into a 3-year sponsorship agreement with Move United, the nation’s leading community-based adaptive sports organization, to become the title sponsor of its longstanding national adaptive sports competition.

The Hartford’s partnership will elevate competition for summer para-athletes. Namely, the support means that Move United Junior Nationals will become The Hartford Nationals, continuing as the largest, longest-standing national sport championship event for athletes with a physical, visual, and/or intellectual disability. The 2023 event will expand to allow adults as well as youth, including wounded warfighters to participate in the highest quality of adaptive sports competition. The competition, which is marking its 66th year, is scheduled for July 8-14 in Hoover/Birmingham, Alabama.

“To have a partner like The Hartford step up as a title sponsor for this national competition is a game changer for the adaptive sports movement,” said Move United Executive Director Glenn Merry. “This commitment helps to show what people with disabilities are capable of and elevates this event to a level comparable to any other national sporting event.”

Through this partnership, Move United is committed to growing opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities to compete. More than 400 adaptive athletes and coaches are expected to participate in the weeklong event that includes competitions, clinics, education and social opportunities. The sports contested include archery, para powerlifting, paratriathlon, shooting, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair tennis.

Athletes must qualify to compete through one of more than two dozen community-based Move United Sanctioned Competitions, or at a National Governing Body or High School Athletic Association sanctioned event, or other events recognized by Move United. Registration opens up on May 1, 2023. For more information, visit thehartfordnationals.org.

The world’s best wheelchair fencers are headed to the Washington, D.C., area next month for the first international wheelchair fencing competition held in the United States in 20 years.

From Jan. 14–17, 2023, the United States will welcome the world to the 2023 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup, held at the National Conference Center in Loudoun County, Va.

More than 100 fencers from 16 different countries are expected to compete over the course of the four-day competition, with action in all three fencing weapons: epee, foil and saber.

“The opportunity to host a domestic parafencing World Cup has been long in the making,” says Lauryn DeLuca PLY, a USA Fencing board member and 2016 Paralympian. “I had grown up in the fencing world seeing able-bodied World Cups held domestically. I remember telling myself, ‘one day, one day.’ That ‘one day’ will be in January. This will be a pivotal moment for USA Fencing as a whole as parafencing will get its chance to shine on American soil.”

USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews says the tournament is a major part of USA Fencing’s push to welcome more athletes into the sport of parafencing.

“Visibility is vital in sports — especially adaptive sports like parafencing,” he says. “With the 2028 Summer Paralympics in Los Angeles on the horizon, we have an exciting opportunity to grow parafencing in this country. But to do so, we must provide opportunities for people to see this fascinating, fast-paced sport for themselves.”

Members of the public are invited to stop by to cheer on Team USA. Admission is free. The National Conference Center is located at 18980 Upper Belmont Place in Leesburg, VA.

The National Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame Award recognizes outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to summer and winter adaptive sports in two categories: Competitor and Contributor. The Hall of Fame was created to honor individuals who have had an influential role in the field of adaptive sports as well as athletes who have excelled in it.

COMPETITOR CATEGORY

The award in the Competitor category recognizes one individual (an athlete or coach) in summer sports as well as one individual in winter sports, who has been active in international competition. Race results, team participation, innovative coaching techniques, and event promotions are considered for this category.

Amy Purdy holding her award in front of a banner that reads Sports Make Us More and the Move United logoThe inductee on the winter competition side is Amy Purdy from Silverthorne, Colorado. A lifelong snowboarder, Purdy lost her legs below the knees to bacterial meningitis when she was 19 years old. Throughout her recovery, Purdy vowed to ride again. At that time, two decades ago, adaptive snowboarding was essentially non-existent. If she wanted to ride again, she would have to figure it out. And that she did. With plenty of duct tape, a few rusty bolts, and an unbreakable spirit, Purdy built her first pair of snowboard feet and got back on the snow…and an extraordinary adventure began.

Inspired to help others, Purdy and the man who would later become her husband, created Adaptive Action Sports, sharing what they had learned and becoming a much-needed resource in the adaptive sports world.  Adaptive Action Sports, a Move United member organization, would later prove instrumental in getting snowboarding added to the 2014 Paralympic Games and it was there that Purdy left her first mark in history, winning the inaugural bronze medal.

And that was just the beginning. Purdy stepped off that podium and onto the dance floor just days later in Hollywood as the first Paralympian to compete on the TV show Dancing With the Stars. She went all the way to the finals coming in runner up and showing the world the possibilities and what adaptive athletes are capable of. Purdy went on to become a New York Times best-selling author for her memoir “On My Own Two Feet.”

Purdy returned to competition at the 2018 Paralympics in South Korea and added another bronze and silver medal to her collection, at the time making her the most decorated Paralympic snowboarder in the history of Team USA.

Since then, she has worked with the International Olympic Committee promoting sustainability, inclusion, peacebuilding and gender equality with young leaders around the world.  Most recently, she has just returned from Berlin, Germany, working with the World Health Organization at a global summit promoting the contribution of sport on international development and peace.

Jaqui in a wheelchair posing with her awardJacqui Kapinowski from Tequesta, Florida, is the 2022 Hall of Fame inductee in the summer competitor category. Kapinowski secured spots on the USA Curling Team, rowing team and triathlon team and is a 2X Paralympian in winter and summer sports. Kapinowski earned nine world championships in four sports. She also competed in close to 100 marathons with many 1st place gold medals and competed in her first ironman in November 2014. In addition, Kapinowski is the founder and president of Shifting Gears United, a nonprofit organization for multiple adapted sports located in Florida and created the Freedom Coast Bicycle Ride. She too has given back to support so many other athletes today.

CONTRIBUTOR CATEGORY

Two awards are also presented in the Contributor category, one for summer sports and another for winter sports. This award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field, including innovative techniques, specialized equipment, program development, education or public relations.

Jeff Inouye holding his award in front of a banner with text reading Sports Make Us More and Move United logoThe winter awardee in the contributor category is Jeff Inouye from Breckenridge, Colorado. Inouye has spent 30 years in the adaptive ski industry and has been a staff member at the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center for 28 years. He was a volunteer for two years, became the Assistant Ski Program Director in 1998 and became the Ski Program Director in 2017.

For the past 20+ years, Inouye has been an instrumental member of the Learn to Ski staff at The Hartford Ski Spectacular and part of the event staff for the VA/DAV Winter Sports Clinic for 15 years. He has also served as a staff member for the US Disabled Ski Team and US Paralympics Alpine Skiing Team.

Inouye has been a leader on the national level, including being a trainer for adaptive OEC/Chairlift Evacuation clinics for the National Ski Patrol, a Selector for the PSIA Adaptive National Team, a member of ANSI ASC B-77 committee for passenger tramways, and a National Ski Area Association Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee member.

Chris Kaag shaking hands with Glenn MerryUS Marine Chris Kaag, Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, was named to the Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame in the summer sports contributor category. Kaag started IM ABLE Foundation after he was diagnosed with adrenomy eloneuropathy and discharged from the service. IM ABLE has awarded hundreds of grants for adaptive equipment since 2007 and started inclusive programming empowering athletes of all abilities to push their limits. Kaag has been inducted into the Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, recognized by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and received the American Red Cross Community Impact Hero Award (2015).

Five-Time Paralympian Matt Scott, who earned two gold medals and one bronze medal during his career with the U.S. Men’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team, has joined the board of directors of Move United, a nonprofit organization that is the national leader in community adaptive sports.

Scott is a five-time Paralympian in the sport of wheelchair basketball for which he has medaled three times, including most recently at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. He is a pioneer and champion for not only wheelchair basketball, but for Paralympians and athletes with disabilities as a whole, and he continues to be an outspoken advocate for inclusion and universal participation in sport.

Born with spina bifida, Scott began using a wheelchair from an early age. He pursued his love for sport by taking up wheelchair basketball at 14 years old. Scott showed early promise and talent, and he was recruited by the U.S. men’s national wheelchair basketball team directly out of high school. He has competed in every summer Paralympic Games since his high school graduation: Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. In addition, he also played the sport professionally in Europe.

His impact extends beyond the court as well. Scott was nominated for an ESPY, became the first U.S. Paralympian to star in a Nike commercial, appeared in Apple commercials and gathered millions of views worldwide displaying his talents with online presence. As a Team Hartford athlete, Scott has joined Move United at several events where he has been able to present adaptive sports equipment to adaptive athletes through The Hartford’s adaptive sports program.

Scott is currently working within the Visa corporation as an associate. His role within the company plays a significant part in creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the corporate space. At Visa, Scott has gained expertise in a variety of different roles across the organization with positions on the Global Sponsorships team, Global insights and analytics team, and global product management.

“To say that I’m proud to serve on the Move United board of directors is an understatement. This is a true honor that I don’t take lightly,” Scott said. “Move United’s mission to enable and encourage access to sport for all, no matter the level of ability, is a mission that I not only want to align myself with, but also play a significant role in making that mission a reality. I am grateful for this opportunity to be impactful in the community of people living with disabilities. I look forward to creating a brighter future for our next generation of Paralympic superstars.”

Move United uses the power of sport to push what’s possible for people with disabilities, confronting ignorance, fueling conversation, and inciting action that leads us to a world where everyone’s included. The national organization offers more than 70 adaptive sports to 120,000 youth and adults with disabilities through a network of more than 200 member organizations in 45 states.

“Including a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds throughout Move United’s staff and board is essential to our success,” said Move United’s Executive Director Glenn Merry. “Matt’s unique experience and point of view as a leader and athlete will help the organization achieve its ambitious Vision 2028 goals.”

Move United uses the power of sport to push what’s possible for people with disabilities, confronting ignorance, fueling conversation, and inciting action that leads us to a world where everyone’s included. As the largest adaptive sports organization in the country, Move United serves over 120,000 youth, wounded warriors and adults annually through more than 200 Move United member organizations in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Over 70 different adaptive sports are offered across the country, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, sled hockey, wheelchair tennis, cycling, wheelchair football, swimming, scuba, track & field, kayaking, climbing, wheelchair racing, hiking, and more. To highlight the various adaptive sports available, Move United has produced the 2023 Adaptive Sports Calendar that features various athletes and adaptive sports, a listing of Move United members across the country, and other resources and information.

The Hartford, along with the most decorated U.S. Winter Paralympian in history, Oksana Masters and Paralympic Medalist Keith Gabel, will surprise 13 deserving athletes with custom-fit adaptive sports equipment to help them participate and excel in adaptive sports. Over the past five years through its Adaptive Sports program, The Hartford has provided 4,200 pieces of adaptive sports equipment that has impacted more than 42,000 individuals in 43 communities across the U.S.

“We have seen first-hand the power adaptive sports has to help improve people’s lives and we are proud to serve as the title sponsor of The Hartford Ski Spectacular for the 29th consecutive year,” said Jonathan Bennett, head of Group Benefits at The Hartford. “Our business is driven by a long-standing conviction that people should be defined by what they can do as opposed to perceived limitations. Alongside our partner Move United, we are humbled to help bring together youth and adults with disabilities to experience the invigorating nature this snow sport event delivers.”

As part of their rehabilitation, 70 wounded military veterans, service members, family and military medical staff from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, San Antonio Military Medical Center, Fort Carson Soldier Recovery Unit, the Tampa VA and communities across the U.S will participate in the event. Since 2003, Move United has served more than 18,000 severely wounded veterans, service members and family members, offering adaptive sports programs in more than 70 different adaptive sports in 45 states through a national network of more than 200 member organizations.

“For me, there is freedom in coming down the mountain,” said retired Army Private First Class Orlando Perez, who sustained a spinal cord injury due to a tumor while serving in the military and became the first athlete to ever represent Puerto Rico in a Winter Paralympics Games. “The feeling of gliding in my mono-ski through the snow is like flying. I can go as fast and often faster than other people who do not have disabilities. With the beauty of the mountains, the sunrises and the happy families on the slopes, I can see everything that is good in life when I ski.”

The Hartford Ski Spectacular also strengthens and expands adaptive snow sports programs in communities across the country by training staff and volunteers at Move United member organizations through the Ski Spectacular Instructor Academy. In addition, the ski instructor academy, endorsed by Professional Ski Instructors of America – American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA-AASI), offers training for instructors in the latest and safest adaptive ski and snowboard techniques for individuals with disabilities.

In addition to title sponsor The Hartford, event sponsors include Veritas Capital, Oshkosh Defense, Wash Depot, Tee It Up for the Troops, Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center, Breckenridge Ski Resort and Breck Sports. This event is also funded in part by a grant from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Through grant support from the VA, Move United receives funding to increase, expand and enhance the quantity and quality of adaptive sport activities available for disabled Veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces to participate in physical activity within their home communities and more advanced U.S. Paralympic and adaptive sport programs at the regional and national levels. The VA also provides essential equipment and technical support to The Hartford Ski Spectacular.

Move United member organization, Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, will serve as the host organization for the event. Additional contributing members include Waterville Valley Adaptive Sports, New England Disabled Sports, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. Partnering organizations include Grand Junction VA Medical Center, Professional Ski Instructors of America-American Association of Snowboard Instructors (PSIA-AASI), and Colorado Adaptive Sports Foundation.

Además del patrocinador oficial The Hartford, otros patrocinadores del evento son Veritas Capital, Oshkosh Defense, Wash Depot, Tee It Up for the Troops, Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center, Breckenridge Ski Resort y Breck Sports.
