Manet Paintings and Works on Paper at the Art Institute of Chicago is the museum’s sixth volume in its online series on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. It features works from across the artist’s career, including ten oil paintings, six drawings, two pastels on canvas, and over sixty prints. This catalogue brings together works in different media to generate fresh insights into Manet’s unique working process; these include Boy with Pitcher and the related drawing Sketches from “The Gypsies,” “The Spanish Ballet,” and “Lola de Valence” for L’Autographe au Salon de 1865. Entries from curators and conservators explore Manet’s technique and track its development across his career.

Edited by Gloria Groom and Genevieve Westerby; essays by Juliet Wilson-Bareau, Emily A. Beeny, Mary Broadway, Helen Burnham, Rachel Freeman, Kimberley Muir, Antoinette Owen, Maria Christina Rivera Ramos, Kirk Vuillemot, Frank Zuccari, Inge Fiedler, Federica Ponzi, Kelly Keegan

The publication is free and has received generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as well as the Art Institute’s David and Mary Winton Green Research Fund.
