The Art Institute uses a security screening and weapon-detection system at all entrances.
The system uses low-frequency (ELF) radio waves—in the range used by the anti-theft systems many retail stores employ—to detect weapons and other harmful devices not permitted in the museum. It meets international and national safety certifications and is safe for the general public, including pregnant women and children.
Visitors with Implanted or Wearable Medical Devices
In keeping with FDA guidance on the anti-theft systems used by retail stores and walk-through metal detectors, it is recommended that visitors with implantable or wearable medical devices consult their device manufacturer or physician for information relating to their own specific device.
Anyone who has safety concerns with the museum’s walk-through scanners is able to request an alternative screening approach.
